Unhappy Funny Stuff going on!

My dash is doing some funny stuff. The ABS light keeps coming on for no reason, then if I restart it will go off. My speed-o will stop working then start again. My gas gauge does the same thing.

Weird!

I tested the alternator and battery and all test good. Is there a relay or something that could cause my display gauges to act up.

It's just the gauge display that is acting up, radio and ac/lights don't seem to have any problems.

Any idea's

Sounds like the electrical connection to the display itself has a problem. I would suspect a bad wire feeding power or ground to the display main circuit board. Alternatively it might be a bad or flakey fuse to the instrument panel.

Check the fuse first since that is easy and cheap.

More likely if it a bad wire to or on the main circuit board of the instrument panel/display. I have not done this with a Ford so I have to give the Chiltons/Haynes manual instructions...

"remove the instrument cluster and inspect for corroded or loose connections" Yeah, duh. Once you have the panel out I would check all the connectors to see if there is corrosion on any of the pins. You may be able to clean them up gently with a pencil eraser or some oxide cleaner from Radio shack. also check cables for frayed insulation or broken or loose wires.

Normally I would suspect the Speed sensor circuit since your ABS and speedo have a problem. But the gas guage is a whole different circuit far as I know so that brings the whole cluster into question. So in my opinion it is a common connection which is probably power or ground. How to get it fixed will have to depend on getting a much better answer from someone who knows, than my answer above.

I could well be wrong about this so hope you get better help.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
