Took my truck for a ride in my subdivision to work out any issues that arise and man do I have an issue. Serious noise from the rearend. My wife’s cousin assembled it a few years ago. No posi trac. It has new bearings. The backlash and pinion preload were right on according to him at the time. I can’t get hold of him now so I need some expertise from you guys and gals. Heres a couple videos.
Your ring gear to pinion clearance is too tight. Look how deep the pinion is in the ring gear. That means the wrong shims were used. The R&P look reusable but the bearings should be replaced and it needs to be rebuilt to proper clearance.
If you have never set up a rear end before it would be worth the money to have a pro do it.
I took the differential carrier apart and the pinion gears have extreme play on the shaft so instead of investing $100+ dollars on those and then still having an open diff with drum brakes I’ll spend $170 on a lsd with disc brakes from an explorer.
WOW! MAJOR CORRECTION!! I would’ve thought the gears on the pinion shaft had way too much movement but I guess not. I didn’t have anything to lose so I added some shims to the pinion housing and I now have zero noise. Thank You Ford390gashog!!
