LED help

I recently switched out my lights with the AFT led lights. Problem is I cannot get the signals to blink. If I put the regular 1157 bulbs in they work fine but with the LED’s there is nothing. I switched out the flasher for the grote 44891 which is supposed to be specific for LED’s but still nothing. I did ground the grote flasher with the extra wire coming off the top. I’m not overly electrically inclined so please help.

So tail light & brake lights work, but not blinkers? Which LED bulbs did you go with?

I’m not familiar with that particular flasher. I’m about to do conversion on my 78. Planned to go with EL12 Flasher made by Novita which I’ve ran equivalent of for my old 95 Wrangler i converted to LEDs 10yrs ago.

Taillights are working. Blinkers are not flashing. If I put in a single LED in the circuit, everything works as it should

with both LEDs you’re not getting enough load to trigger the flasher. I would try picking up an EL12 or LL552 & try first. If still no success you’ll likely need to splice in a load resistor in your blinker wire before the lamp socket.

which bulbs are you using?

You can Just get a blinker relay from Amazon specifically designed to work with LEDs, even includes the "clicking" feature. Runs about 8$, plug and play.

Sorry for the late reply. I got it fixed. I went with the cheapest electronic flasher and I installed load resistor's in the lights. Everything works good now

My front turn signals are LED bulbs in the original sockets. I wired in a load resistor to each socket. Without the load resistor, you won't get blinky blinky. My truck has no incandescent bulbs. All LED's. I have a flatbed, so the tail lights are a Jeep unit type with everything self contained.

I just got the relay from Amazon, but I'm not sure where it goes. There's one that dangles to the left of the steering column, but it looks like there's another higher up and all the way on the left. I don't know which is which.

Do you know the value of the load resistors (what resistance)? Be good to know for future.

The old, mechanical flashers work due to current flow. The flow through the flasher heats up a bi-metal strip which opens and interrupts the circuit. When it cools off the contacts close and the lights come back on. LEDs draw a lot less current, too little to allow the bi-metal strip to heat up. Hence why you were not getting a flash.

Adding the load resistors would allow you to continue to use your analog flasher. They are designed to create the same current flow as the bulbs. You can pick them up at any of the auto parts chain stores, retailers like Wal-Mart, or online vendors like superbrightleds.com or amazon.com among others.

Many electronic flashers still require the current flow of the analog bulbs or load resistors. You can get an electronic flasher that will work without load resistors. It is called a "no load" flasher.
