I'm going to go with manufacturing defect, Ford should really have done that one for free, even if out of warranty. They say that those things are supposed to be lifetime parts, we all know that isn't actually the case though. I hope the seller ended up taking care of you or you were able to pick up a fairly priced used DPF.

Yep pipes are black. never saw smoke. I clear the code and it comes back 200 miles later.
