wow,what a difference

Just finished our annual trip to Northern Ontario, first real towing with the 17 Expedition. What a difference some bottom end makes. Replaced a 15 F250, 4x4, 4door, short bed, really nice truck but the 6.2 was a joke. you can't keep it out of 3rd gear when towing and I'm only pulling 4500# routinely. The Expy with same 3:73 axle and trans shifted 1 gear 7 or 8 places where the SD was in third continually trying to hold the 70ish cruise setting. Much less drama on the highway. I know someone is going to tell me the Expedition can't possibly out pull the SD, I get it. It's bigger and stronger and I gave up quite a bit of payload capacity but I didn't have to spend 10 hours shifting it manually to keep the rpm's off the ceiling. The 6.2 was the most miserable truck engine I've ever owned and I've owned a lot. I would certainly recommend the Expedition as a tow vehicle within it's design limitations. A set of tow mirrors and it would be perfect for my needs. Jim

In the 6.2 super duties the 4.30 gear option is a must. I love how my Ecoboost Expedition tows also.

I had heard that about the gearing but with the mileage being so bad (as expected) and 80% of my driving not towing I decided to live with it. Turned out to be more than I could stand. I got in it right so selling it without taking a major beating worked out ok. great truck but the motor-lesson learned!

Apples and potatoes, but I’d much prefer to tow with my ‘16 Navigator L than our ‘97 F250... and it’s a 460 5-Speed with 4.10 gears. Although I will admit when the neighbor buried a skid loader in a manure pile last week, we hooked the chains to the pickup and knocked the cobwebs off of low range!
