shifting into 4x4

shifting into 4x4
Recently acquired a 1990 f150 4x4 and I am having trouble getting it into 4L. It will go from 2H to 4H but that is all it moves. It needs to move left into neutral then down and back right into 4L. It has the auto tranny. I tried shifting it while in Neutral and in Park. The hubs were locked. I cant think of anything I am missing.
Anyone know whats going on?

shifting into 4x4
When I shift into 4L is is a little harder to get into than 4H but still not bad at all. If I have the hubs locked in all I need to do is pull back on the shifter once and im in 4x4. It always goes in easy. (for 4H) 4L is sometimes a little bit harder to get out of gear if I have put some torque to the tires. Other than it just being tight I dont know why its not going into gear unless your pulling in the wrong direction.
