Hi i was just wondering what glass packs are exactly, what they do to your engine, any extra HP or anything? and i would also like to know how much they would cost for a 2000 F-150 with the 4.2 and automatic. Are they practical for my truck?
glasspacks are like striaght pipe but have a crackling sound to them. You can get anywhere from 12 to 36 inches long. The general rule is the shorter they are the louder they are. They are cheap. They say you gain hp by eliminating backprssure. I have bought some 14 inche ones for like $14 a piece and i have seen trush sell for up to $25 or so. Mine weren't fiberglass packed. And glasspacks are reversable so you can have loud or quiet if you like.
I have a glasspack on my '92 explorer. I put it in after the pipe to the stock muffler rotted out. I noticed a mild increase in torque throughout the rpm range, a little better throttle response, but the biggest gain was at WOT. The gain was just enough to be noticeable. For the $15 I paid for it, it works good.
just remember to get full effect, take off both the muffler AND the resonator, if there is one. the resonator is much more restrictive to exhaust flow than the muffler is.
glasspacks don't last very long. they will blow out after a while. i heard they will warp your heads but i doubt it.i had 8 inch packs on a 302 and i did not feel any gains in anything except for gain in noisyness. great for rednecks
glasspacks are no different than a stock muffler or resonator, just that they are straight through with a larger diameter mesh tube running down the middle. I wouldn't think that they would last any shorter or longer than a regular muffler. Heads will warp with too much temp, but a better flowing exhaust will help expell hot gasses and actually lower the header temperature.
glasspacks don't last long i come from a hillbilly town and i know this kind of stuff. they are packed with fiberglass and when it gets hot it will fall apart and blow out.to make it even louder.
mufflers are built the exact same way. a mesh tube surrounded by fiberglass. Now, I'm not saying that glass packs are built as WELL as stock mufflers are, just that they are designed the same way.
yeah i know that i was talking about the glasspacks and how they like to blow out after a while especially when you put water in them when they are hot. then your packing is all busted
back in the day we used to set em on fire full of gas to hollow them out, all it did was blow em out faster. ive seen steel packed or smithys but dont know much about em. if u run a 2in tailpipe in duals you can get that old school rapping sound. and some big long tailpipe cans sometimes mellow the sound out they r a cheap way to get a lot of sound and no backpressure. somepeople say the reduced backpressure ruins your exhaust seats but i never had any problems. the new throaty sound is flowmasters but they r pricy.
I've got true duel exhaust, no cats. I have 24 inbch cherry bombs on it. My tailpipes exit straight out the back bumper.
Mine are loud when you put your foot in it. Pretty quiet at idle.
I've run glass packs all my life, with no mechanical problems.
