Question ABS Sensor Removal

1st off, after reading through the threads over the last few weeks, I'd like to say thanks to everyone for all the help with alot of the issues with buying an older vehicle - in my case a '90 F250, 351, E4OD. I'm slowly ironing out the bugs, of which there a few, but with a straight body and new 351, I couldn't pass her up. Now the question is, is there an easy way to remove the ABS Sensor from the Diff to clean it. (ABS light is on) I removed the bolt expecting it to come out freely - as the speed sensor did 2 weeks ago - but alas it was not to be. If anyone can throw any light on this for me I'd really appriecate it. Thanks in advance.....

ABS Sensor Removal

This comes from a 1992 Ford Tech. CD:

1. Pull wiring harness connector off.
2. Remove sensor hold down bolt and remove the sensor from axle housing.

I don't think anything changed in that area (like many others) between 1990 and 1992. I think the magnetized sensor and exciter ring is helping to keep it in. Here are the directions for installation:

1. Clean axle mounting surface. Use care to prevent dirt from entering axle housing.

2. Inspect and clean the magnetized sensor pole piece to ensure it is free of loose metal particles which could cause erratic system operation. Inspect sensor O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.

3. Lightly lubricate sensor O-ring with motor oil, align the sensor bolt hole, and install. Do not apply force to the plastic sensor connector. The sensor flange should slide to the mounting surface. This will make sure the air gap setting is between .005 - .045 inches (.127 - 1.14 mm).

4. Install hold down bolt and torque to 25 - 30 ft.lb. (34-40 N-m).

5. Inspect the blue sensor connector seal and replace if missing or damaged. Push the connector on the sensor.

Hope this helps, R.A.

Thanks for the help... What about the actual removal? I don't want to damage the top of the sensor. Is there an easy way to remove it or any special tool??

Nope, I don't see any special tools required to safely get the sensor out.
I guess you could use a thin, flat scraper to get underneath the flange of the sensor and lift it far enough to get a screwdriver underneath to pry it out further? R.A.
