I've had enough of the whiney pump on my truck. 94 F-350. 460. My problem is I don't have a pulley puller. I've never changed a pump before. Is there a way around getting the pulley off or should I chase down a puller from somewhere? If I do pull the pump, is it ok to drive without it using Armstrong? There is a NAPA and an O'Reilleys close by that might have a puller. Thanks.
Replying to my own. I can get ahold of a puller but the questions keep coming. I want to change the hoses too. Are they special made or can they be bought? I've had no luck local finding them. I've also read of installing a filter for the powere steering. Anyone do that and if so, where did you put it?
Most local autoparts stores will rent you a puller. The filter people use sometimes is a Magnefine, but I don't know what hose it goes on. As for new hoses, again, Autozone, NAPA, etc. should be able to get those for you.
Update-got the hoses. Can I use a fuel filter in the return line?
I have the directions for the pump and it talks about flushing and bleeding the system before using. Here's what fakes me out.
1. Connect the high press. hyd line to the pump.
2. Place open end of the pump return hose into a waste container. (Should this be from the pump or the gearbox?)
3. Fill res with fluid and crank, don't start the engine. Continue to replenish fluid until the fluid discharged from the return hose is clear. (again, hooked to the gearbox?) it may be necessary to cap the reservoir return line fitting to prevent fluid from leaking during this step.
It then goes into the bleed. Do I need to do that or will it bleed over time?
