Hi airchief and welcome to FTE

How many miles on the truck? Any other symptoms? Use any oil or coolant? Can you describe the noise better?

truck has 108,010. Symptoms... sometimes seems to crank rough at first then gains rpm to steady out. this time is just creak..then sounds like metal tapping. going up with rpm and down.

removed the lifter and pushrod, checked cleaned and reinstalled. turned it over with the valve cover off, oil pumped, gapped checked.
removed the water pump, noise heard from behind water pump. Could this be the timing chain or crankshaft...help!!!
ps also checked the starter fro being hung. checked 4.0 and remove all spark pulg. I can get one full turn on crank before it locks up with spark plugs..

I'm wondering if you dont have the dreaded 4.2 coolant in the cylinders problem. If you do a search on here you'll find more info on that.
Also take a look at www.leakingfords.com
