I drove my trusty 35yr old Ranger last night and parked in the yard like usual, everything was running just fine until I went to start her up this morning.....nothing! just dead silence, no starter engagement, nothing, just dead! I have bright headlights so I think I can rule out the battery. The accessories work with the key in "ASSC" and "RUN" so hopefully the ignition switch is good.
On my first 8-9 attempts to start it was just silence, nothing, bone dead! on my next 2 attempts I heard the starter solenoid click but it did not engage the starter, then on my next 8-9 attempts it was back to nothing, just silence. I am thinking a bad solenoid? I won't have time to diagnose it until next weekend. Any suggestions on where to focus my attention or are my suspicions right with the solenoid? Thanks.
Turned out to be a bad VR which was allowing 17 volts @idle! way too high! and in turn it fried my battery. (fortunately the battery was over 8yrs old anyways).
When did batteries get so expensive? It's been nearly 10yrs since I bought one, but $150 was a bit of sticker shock!
Batteries and tires about doubled in price after W left office.
Watch out for the ring terminals on the starter relay getting loose. The wires have to be splayed out to allow the rings to get connected tightly, otherwise the 'stack' keeps some from making good contact. A loose terminal on the battery post can lead to some weird behavior in a 34 year old, from experience. Radio shuts off, wipers slow down, and the engine seems to lose power and run poorly.
