ok, my truck was backfiring at all speeds after it was warmed up and hesitating at speeds around 65-70. but it stopped after i plugged a missing vacuum plug on the base of the carb. i was wondering if this is coincedince or if that could have really been the problem.

Yep, if that hose were to the vacuum advance in the distributor, it sure could. BTW, you have to make sure the advance is actually on the correct metered vacuum port, or it will still run funky. The advance must go to the port that varys the vacuum according to the throttle/rpm. None or little at idle, and increase with throttle. All the other ports are full unmetered vacuum. On my carter 1 bbl, the metered port is facing the passenger side. MK
