My 77 E-150 is shutting down after the engine warms up I can drive for a couple of miles and it runs like a champ then it just dies no sputtering no warning just shuts off then it wont start it tries but wont turn over and has to sit for hours and if it does start right after it shuts down it doesn't make it very far and shuts off again , I've replaced the ignition coil, ignition module, starter solenoid ,alternator, voltage regulator , brand new carb ,,pretty sure its not a vapor lock because its not been hot this summer and I only drive it to work and back which is only about a mile and a half each way seems the engine doesn't get hot enough to shut down,I have the dog box off so the heat isn't building up in the engine compartment and it does it at night when its cool out. I don't see any burnt wires, the charging system has no problems . Any info or ideas would be greatly appreciated ,,thanks Jason C FORD E150 351W C6 AUTO TRANS
If the fuel pump doesn't fix it. Have you replaced all the rubber fuel lines? They can look fine but break down on the inside. I've also had them get soft and the ones on the suction side of the pump would collapse under suction.
Another possibility would be the magnetic pick up in the distributor.
Also make sure you got good grounds/ground straps ( engine to chassis & body ) .
Classic sign of bad pick up inside the distributor. Gets hot -> flat out quits -> cools down -> works again for a bit,... repeat. You can unplug the dizzy and test the ohms when it’s failed but I don’t know the correct versus bad values off hand.
Have you tested for a spark when it's not starting? Have you checked for fuel at the carb? Maybe firing the parts cannon isn't the best way to approach this.
Thanks Brnfree ...the distributor was the next thing pretty sure it still has the original , fuel lines are good , carb and fuel pressure good ,spark good ,like I said something is getting hot and causing a shut down and checking the distributor is next ,, at least the van is getting some new updated parts ,,everything on its 40 something years old and runs like a champ just not very far .lol .
