460 Valve Stem Seals

Hello, I am hoping to be doing some minor engine work to my 460 f350 this fall. I am wanting to replace the valve stem seals. Which ones do I need for my 86? I know they are umbrella style seals, but some are 11/32 which says stock, And then there are some that have different ones for the intake side and exhaust side. They say pre 2/1986 or after 2/1986. How do I know what year my motor was?

Also I plan on doing the air into the cylinder to keep the valve up, Any one done this? What did you use to compress the spring? Thanks

Only thing I know to do with the valve stem size is to take a small 11/32 ignition wrench, and take the valve cover off and see if it slides over the stem and how close it is.

You will have to use something like this to compress the valve spring.

I have the air fittings for the spark plug holes but I have also used the rope method.

As for compressing the spring there are at least two kinds. One I just a pry bar that goes on the rocker stud and the other is a big adjustable C shaped one that is ok but still kind of a pain.

How much psi should i put into the cylinder? Also the motor would have to be on the compression stroke, will it stay or will it rotate? Thanks

I would hope that it stays.
you will need a way to turn the crankshaft by hand
Hopefully it won't be too bad with all of the plugs out

Ok, So I went ahead and changed the valve cover gaskets because the pass. side was leaking onto exhaust, might help if the bolts were actually tight. Most were finger tight. So I was trying to get a good look at the valve stem seals to see if they were all hard and crusty of still rubber like. I was expecting to see umbrella style seals but they were not. They were more like these BELOW (Not 100% what they looked like but similar. Are these stock on an 86?

Also, I want to check the timing on the truck. Where are the marks at on the timing cover? Pass side driver side? And there is just a line on the crank right? THanks

Those are positive clip on seals. The upper part of the valve guide is machined to accept them. They usually last a long time.

Fords usually have one pointer on the engine, and the number scale is on the damper.
