I am redoing the metal vacuum line from my distributor to the carb (300 I6). When I undid the fitting at the distributor, I was expecting a standard double flare connection, but instead found the fitting shown in the photo below:
What kind of fitting is this? Where do I get one and how do I attach it to the tubing? Can anyone explain to me why this different fitting is required? Thanks.
After further research (old Ford tractor forum) I have determined that the fitting is called a "Threaded Sleeve Nut". It is similar to a compression fitting but not quite interchangeable.
It crimps itself on the steel tube when tightened against the inner surface of the female side. To get it off you need to cut the tubing in back of the nut and pull it off.
My old Scout had same fitting on the vacuum advance. I replaced it, except with a twist. I used the compression nut and steel tubing, but cut the tubing to about 3/4" then flared it so I could use a 5/16" vacuum hose. Flaring the tube was unnecessary actually. All you really need is a small zip tie, which I use on all vacuum and PCV hoses anyway.
