Foreign made fuel pump

I have a 1983 F100. It had fuel issues when I got it. I took it to a mechanic who thought a new fuel pump would help. The new pump didn't work at all. He wasn't really surprised. He said the foreign made fuel pumps are crappy. He ordered a second one and things worked well for a while.

Now I am having fuel issues again. I took it to a different mechanic. He says this fuel pump doesn't have enough pressure. Said the same thing about foreign pumps, but doesn't know where to get an original.

Any thoughts? Can an old one be rebuilt?

What engine does your truck have? The chances of getting a faulty mechanical fuel pump are slim even though they are probably made overseas. Take your car to a different mechanic if the jabroni can't find one. There are at least 4 listed on Rockauto depending on your engine.

The other 2 things to look at,
The type of fuel we now have. Gasohal will eat rubber and still be hungry. They make new rubber fuel hose that can with stand Gasohal do you this that fuel pump is made with the good rubber?

That brings up point 2, even if that pump was made in the USA how long ago do you think that was and it has been sitting on the shelf and that non Gasohal rubber drying out?

After my truck been sitting about 2 years, used fuel pump off motor,it ran when I took truck apart for rebuild, I could not get pump to pull fuel from a can sitting on the fender.
I replaced the pump with one from Auto Zone and it's been fine for moving in and out of garage.

Thanks for the responses. The jabroni that can't find the American made is a good friend of mine. A professional mechanic for 40 years who owns a 15 bay shop. I trust his knowledge. He says that just because RockAuto has one labeled Delphi, that does not tell you where it was made.

He also says that ethanol gas will eat rubber. I was talking him after I posted the message and he thinks that FuzzFace may be right - it may not matter where the pump was made if the problem is the diaphragm degrading from ethanol. We are just going to put on a new one and I'll just use ethanol free fuel.

All newer production fuel system items are ethanol compatible. NORS stuff is likely not. The have not used natural rubbers in fuel system components for decades. Think you just got bad or old stock bits or
the rubber fuel lines feeding it may be disintegrating internally and the debris may be messing up the check valves in the fuel pump. If you have not replaced them it should be done.

Sorry.

I never @$$umed the fuel pumps listed on Rock Auto were made in the U.S.A. If you want to stay all domestic you might have to locate a NOS fuel pump for your truck or go to an aftermarket electric fuel pump. This fuel pump MIGHT be made in the U.S.A.

Airtex pumps are still US made(mostly). You can check fuel pressure with an inline gauge to see if that's the problem. Should be at least 4 PSI.
