I am looking for some information on installing a compact sub in my 2012 F150. My wife has an Edge with the factory sub and it has made me look around for something to put in my truck. I have an XLT so no factory sub or simple hook up but I see a lot on crutchfields website for compact subs. I don't really want to take out the factory radio due to costs but if I can do this fairly easily it might be worth it. Anybody done this before? How did you do it and what would you recommend?
I personally went waaay above and beyond just a factory upgrade so I didn't do exactly what you're looking for. However, here's my suggestion. IMHO, at least replace your head unit with an aftermarket that has a decent equalizer. By the time you add a sub, IMHO, I don't think your stock mids and highs will be able to keep up with it, so the EQ in the head unit will help with some boost of the higher end.
Look into getting some amplified bazooka tubes as they come with an amp already, VERY efficient (as in louder with less power), easy install, and I believe some of them accept line level inputs. I had a 6" amped bazooka in my old '94 with built in 200watt amp, and it was PLENTY loud. Under our back seats, you may be able to get an 8" in there with the seat down; 10" may not fit.
I think Crutchfield has a guide on how to install peripherals while keeping stock radio. Google is your friend.
Line out converters (loc) from speakers will deliver signal to an amp so you don’t have to fuss with the head unit at all if you don’t want, then you just need power from battery to amp and you’ll want to tap a fuse that’ll turn amp on and off with ignition switch. It’s really not hard, just make sure all connections are solid and of course it’s grounded.
I put a Rockville 10" slim subwoofer behind the rear seat of my 2014 Screw. I have a gun box under the seat so I couldn't use that space. I also upgraded all 4 door speakers and the sound is great compared to the stock system. Easy to wire also since it has high level inputs with auto on/off so I just tied into my rear speaker wires. Didn't have to mess with the head unit at all. Just ran the power cable under the door sills and through a space behind the emergency brake.
This is what I did in my 2013. Not this exact one but you get the idea. Found it on Amazon for cheap too one day. Googled the specific part number and found it less than it was on the Ford site. Totally plug and play and the sound blows my wife's 2014 FX4 system with factory Sony sound out of the water... Came with 4 new door speakers, a few cables and the sub...
