Engine Removal Question

I have a 2005 Ford Econoline E350 Super Duty Van with the extended cab and automatic transmission.

I am in the process of removing the engine due to the infamous rod knock. I successfully removed the Driver's side exhaust manifold, though I have run into some difficulties:

1. There is very little space in and around the passenger's side exhaust manifold to insert a ratchet or to turn a wrench with enough torque to undo the bolts. It looks as if there is enough space in the engine tunnel to remove the engine without having to remove the passenger's side exhaust manifold. Is it necessary to remove the passengers side exhaust manifold in order to remove the engine from van?

2. The bolts connecting the engine to the torque converter are very tight, is this normal? There is very little clearance between the bolt and the oil pan, how do you guys remove these bolts?

Thanks!

John G.

What engine? Yes they are close and usually an open ended wrench is used. Most engines are pulled with the manifolds attacked and just disconnected at the exhaust flange. I'm not familiar with pulling a modular motor.

Forgot to say it is a 5.4L V8 Modular.

You can double a combination wrench using another of equal size to effectively double it's length to gain leverage, if there's room enough to do it. You do so by hooking the box end over the open end of the wrench on the bolt. Or go buy a long combination wrench and try that. Also you can cut the open end off the wrench and use a cheater pipe on the wrench. This method is easier to use in tight spaces.

I've pulled, replaced 10s of engines in vans (one or two cab/body completely off) ------------------on this model there is NO NEED to pull exhaust manifolds cab on, BUT you will need an engine puller that sits down DEEP in the valley of the 5.4L (otherwise you'll have clearance issues). On the modulars you basically have no more than 5-6" of vertical movement tops...................

On the TC bolts, simply heat soak with the "blue wrench" -- they'll be easier to remove.....................I use offset wrenches to remove and have a special offset wrench to apply factory torque during reinstallation
