Coil Problem

I have a 2001 F150 Lariet 5.4L 4X4 with 61,000 miles.

I have had the #5 coil replaced in March 2003 at a cost of $320 and again a month later in April 2003 with still being under warranty. Each time the problem was caused by rain water getting onto the engine. Today is September 23rd. Had the same problem again except this time it is the #8 coil. Another $320.
Ford Customer Service claims that this is not a recall problem and won't help me out. However another customer had his vehicle in for the same problem with the same coil. The Ford dealership said that they have experienced a number of vehicles with the same problem. I like my truck, but can't afford to have the coils replaced every couple months. By the way, I have the extended 75,000 mile warranty, but this problem isn't covered under it.

Anyone else out there having the same problem and if so, what have they done about it?

Coil Problem

Check the seal on the back of hood area on the cowl. It sounds like the seal is leaking and letting water down onto the engine which puddles up in the sparkplug holes.

Coil Problem

Thanks for the reply. I checked the rubber seal on the cowl and it is in good condition.

I would think that even if the coils get wet, they shouldn't malfuntion if it was designed right.

Coil Problem

The problem is is the design of the head. The plugs are way down in the holes and if water gets down in there and puddles, it will short to ground causing the coil to burn up.
It is another benefit of overhead cams!!

I have a F-150 Supercrew 2001, with 62,000 miles. Last month my wife had a coil replaced when she was on a trip with here family. She took it to a dealer, and they replaced #8. Well here we are today and its running bad again. I took it to a friend with a Ford computer, which said #4 was misfiring, now. I bought the part for $100 and I'm gonna replace it my-self. My problem is I dont know which cylander is #4. A dealer told me to look on the sticker on the front of the frame. But I found no diagram. Any Ideas?

I am getting scared I'm goning to have to replace all of the coilpacks, which with my own labor being over $800 is a lot...
Any more ideas?

You can find your cylinders numbers in a manuall for your truck. they should have some pictures for all the different engines of that model year. You can pick up a chiltons or the other manual(cant remember the name of it) at the local parts store. In the engines section for sparkplug replacement it should show how the cylinders are numbered and the firing order.

Hi bonick and welcome to FTE
The cylinders are numbered 1-4 on the passenger's side starting at the front, 5-8 on the driver's side.

Worked great - Thanks for the help! This forum is a great resource. The coil pack was the problem and the solution. I just hope no more go bad!

Thumbs down

Why does bonick think that he isn't going to have anymore problems? Did you complain to Ford Customer Service Headquarters in Dearborn Michigan?
This is a design flaw and should be fixed by Ford. If enough people complain, then a recall will go into effect and we'll get a refund of our money that we spent getting them to fix the coil problems. Remember, I have already had the #5 go out twice and the #8 once.

I really doubt that complaining to Ford will do any good. They dont usually listen very well
It's also not really a safety concern like most recalls and realistically probably only a couple percent of all the trucks on the road have coil problems. Unfortunately we only hear about the problem ones and not all the troublefree ones.

Angry Coil Problems

I have a 1998 Ford Expedition, and I have had the same problem over and over again. I have had coils replaced a couple of times, and unfortunately I am having one replaced again today. I was beginning to worry that I had bought a lemon. I am a female, and unfortunately, I have no mechanical knowledge and I will never be able to replace them myself, but I am happy to see that there are a few people out that does have the knowledge to be able to save themselves some money. And I will be able to talk with someone to see if they will be able to replace them for me.
Thanks. I am making this website one of my favorites. Alot of good information from all of you.

Hi C and welcome to FTE

No fun replacing coils all the time
What number coils failed?
Number 4 dies sometimes if the heater hose above it has a loose hoseclamp and leaks coolant onto it.

Hello Racerguy..

Since coming onto this website, I had the knowledge yesterday to ask which coil went bad, and it was the #4.

Thanks for the reply. I will have the heater hose checked to see if the hoseclamp is loose. I must say this again, this website is amazing.

Thanks.

Hello,

I purchased my F150 SCrew 3 months ago and started having issues almost immediately. After a lot of headache it was determined that the crew that detailed the truck used high pressure water to clean the engine.

I only had issues when there was wet weather.

The dealership took all of the coils out and used forced air and blew out the ports to remove all of the water.

If you are going to do this remember to keep the holes plugged so you are not blowing the dirt and water into the block.

this resolved the issue and also has me leary of problems for in the future.

Rather be First On Race Day instead of Found On Road Dead
