I haven't had my Ex too long, but I noticed something yesterday that I haven't noticed before too much..
I went for a drive through some really hilly areas and noticed that there seemed to be no trans braking at all. When I let off the pedal, the truck would come out of gear and go to and idled coast going downhill. If I hit O/D OFF it would stay in the idled coast unless I gave it some pedal. This didn't seem abnormal, but I get NO trans braking out of this and on long decents I would have to use the brakes A LOT! Should there be some trans braking from a down shift or is this normal??
If this is normal, what can I do to help my brakes out since I wasn't pulling my TT on this trip and I am sure the brake wear wasn't too light on this trip? I am thinking of an Exaust Brake, but should I need this or should the trans be helping a little instead of coasting?
I am not totally sure if this is clear or not, if not, please let me know and I will try and clarify a little more...
Diesels have little or no engine braking ability. If you have an auto transmission, the torque converter lock up is programmed to unlock during coasting, which disconnects what little braking ability the engine / transmission can give.
If you switch the TC lockup you can gain a bit of braking.
The western Diesel Exhaust Brake works great for me. Very worth the money IMHO. I tow a 30' TT and load the back down almost every weekend in the summer time, and every other weekend in the winter (Avid Camping and Recreation) it's pretty easy to install. And it comes with the TC Lock up feature as well as a high and PTO idle options on the Turbo Brake III.
