I recently bought a 79 f350, 351m c6 trans. When I bought it we knew it didnt run the guy swore up and down it was just a bad carb, after seeing how bad it looked it made sense. Since then I have rebuilt the carb, replaced spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fuel pump, new rear fuel tank with all new fuel lines. New ICM, new voltage regulator, battery, and alternator. The truck start right away but does after about 6 seconds, every now and then it'll start and stay running for a while to the point where I feel like it'll make it around the block. It makes it about 4 houses down then dies again. We've tried adjusting the carb and still no progress. Hoping someone has a recommendation for what to look for next, at this point anything will help!
We replaced the distributor last night and got it all timed and drove it around the block a few times and then into the garage. This morning after I changed the oil went to go to the gas station to fill it up and made it only a couple houses down before it started cutting out. It will halfway idle on it's own, but the second I'd give it gas Itd sputter and die. I'm starting to think this thing is cursed, going to look into a new carburetor, any recommendations? Right now it's just the stock motorcraft 2 barrel 2150.
I've heard of similar issues being related to a bad ground or electrical connection that LOOKED good but wasn't crimped well or corroded.. come to think of it– I've experienced that myself!
In general when ive had spark issues in trucks their was lots of misfiring but the motor still ran. When it was fuel related the motor doesnt run at all or cuts out due to shortage. Just my experiences. I could absolutely see this being carb related.
I didnt see anything about a fuel filter did you change that? Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Run some checks and slow down on the parts. Check your spark color, timing, etc.
cheap to check.

The guy I bought the truck from removed both tanks and just used some random tank behind the seat. So I got a new tank all new lines and pump and already put a new filter in.
Agreed. If you've eliminated vacuum leaks, PCV, fuel delivery, and ignition problems, I'd try another carburetor. But of course that's the first thing I do anyway since there are much better carburetors and intake manifolds available than Motorcraft
