1971 F250 New Old Truck Purchase
#46
Thanks for the information on the starter and the shield. I just replaced the starter with an OEM style and we did have to remove the headers from the block to get it in & out. I think with the heat shield and the few miles I put on the truck I may git couple of years out of this starter. I think the next one will a mini starter if I keep the headers and do not go with the EFI exhaust manifolds.
Anyone out there running a mini starter on a 300 4.9L motor with headers ? Any type & part number ?

I am currently running a Holley Two Barrel carb on my 300 motor with the air cleaner shown in the picture. I do not care for the look and would like to go back to a more period looking unit, round (maybe 8-10"). I think the Autolite 2100 & the Holley 2V have the same filter mount size. Any idea's or recommendations. Would like to paint it the same blue motor color.

Well no but they should give it's size & width. My Sanderson headers is like 3/16 if that from the oem stock starter shaft bearing housing an could not wrap that end the way, I wanted too. So ended up buying a mini starter an wrapping it on my Fe mini starter.
But, I'd think any reflecting of any of the heat will help prolong it's live..
There's better starter blankets today then when, I did mine as they self lock as it being wrapped around it as, I seen in catalogs..
Orich .

Hmm, I think I got mine from Powerhouse or something like that. The best don't know, but for me it's what fits between the block an the frame.
Got off ebay for like $99bucks with free shipping or something like that as, I remember it's been a while since buying it.
.
Many mini starters are listed for the Fe motors but only a few will fit within the truck frames so keep that in mine.
Bigger is not better that will fit in this case.
I have not had any problems with the mini starter, since I've had it, placed the heat wrap on it since, I bought it, I thought I'd use it.
I'm using just using regular lager black plastic zip ties to holed the wrap on it, It 's to hard to use the ss zip locking tie. which are not pictured.

Well it has been an quite a week having my trans & cooler redone on my F250 with a 300 4.9l motor. Installed a heavy duty trans cooler so that will help trans heat when hauling a load (not very offend). In testing the truck my buddy shop found that the trans still had a fluid leak from the input shaft area that needed to be fixed. They removed the trans and found that the bolts that hold the pump cover at the front of the trans were all hand tight & one was striped & someone had forced a larger bolt in the hole. Fluid was leaking out of the gasket/seal at the cover.
Someone has changed transmissions on this truck at one time as my truck came with a standard C4 trans and when I got the truck it had a older "Green Dot" trans that is build for slick Snow/Ice/Mud conditions. Lucky for me my buddy had a good used trans case too replace my junk one. In the rebuild we changed back to a standard C4 valve body with shift kit that it already had in it. He has been driving it home from work 15 miles for the last few days to test it out. All looks good. Pick it up Monday & see how she feels.

Better Quality Starter Solenoide
"ND" --- A few months ago I changed my Starter Solenoid in my 1971 F250. The old one was not bad and had not failed. I was installing a new OEM style starter and thought a new solenoid would be a good thing. I got a new solenoid from NAPA, installed it and it lasted two weeks. NAPA gave me a new one exchange at no cost, installed it and this one just failed in less than 600 miles. I am going to take it back and get a refund and look for a better quality solenoid.
When I had my brake light peddle switch fail I tried a cheep "China" special & it broke the internal spring in only a few months. You posted on this thread the Motorcraft Part Number and I was able to order it from my local Ford dealer. It is a quality unit & has worked out great. Is there a Motorcraft built Solenoid that fits my truck? Do you have a part number that I can check with the Ford dealer? I looked at LMC & Carpenter web site and it looks like 1955 - 1972 F100 & F250 use the same solenoid. Thanks
