inline 6 blowing oil everywhere
I have an inline 6 (1994) and the thing started blowing oil when it runs ... all over. Can someone help with a suggestion for repairs? The exaust is clean, the oil level seems to be ok and the pvc valve rattles.
Welcome to FTE! I've been experiencing the same problem, and what I've found out so far is that this is pretty common in this engine as they accumulate the mileage. The rings begin to allow a little "blow-by" from the combustion chamber into the crankcase and pressurize it. When the pressurization becomes to much for the PCV to bleed off, it starts blowing out the PCV breather tube into the air cleaner, the dipstick tube, anywhere it can get out. And because the oil it carries out is either vaporized or carried out as a real fine mist under pressure, it makes a HUGE mess with a pretty small amount of oil!
Open your air cleaner to see if it is full of oil. Check your dipstick to see if it is backed out about a quarter or a half an inch. I'm likely going to have to rebuild my engine soon, but in the mean time I pulled the breather tube off of the air cleaner and routed it to a little container with a filter. The oil collects there and the engine compartment stays cleaner. And I just don't put many miles on my truck, so it may go this way until late spring. (When the weather starts getting nice again. At this date, I probably have only a couple weeks left before the drizzle sets in forthe winter.) I just can't overhaul it right now.
There are some other possible causes, but this sounds pretty common from what I've read on the forum. Also, you might try posting to the inline 6 forum if you haven't already. The guys who post a lot there seem pretty helpful.
Good Luck.
Also, I'm only a few weeks ahead of you here and can only relate what my experience has been so far. I'm going to encourage you to seek out more experienced opinions than mine. How 'bout it guys; somebody else chime in on this?
