Well, it's done after a multi page thread, you guys have convinced me that gears are the way to go.
After going back and forth, I went with the 5.13s. That puts me at 26xx RPM at 70 MPH in OD, so hopefully that'll allow the use of OD when towing.
Also decided to throw in a Ected electric locking front diff just in case. The rear LSD actually seems to be working well at this point so I'm not going to replace it.
Afte rthey're installed and I get some break in miles on them, I'll report back with a towing review.
What size tires and lift will be on your rig with those 5.13's?
Stewart
NO lift, just X and modded Bs. 32.6" tires. Calculated RPM using the 5.13s and that puts it at 2600 or so at 70 mph in OD with that size tire. Hopefully that will allow the use of OD sometimes when towing.

I think that those deep gears and that RPM range will allow OD towing on all but the big mountain passes, when I had my 4.88s with 32" tire's it was like a freight train towing!

Agreed! I am running 4.88's with stock tires now and my Ex rarely comes out of OD above 60 mph with a 10k trailer. You should be able to pull a two bottom turning plow with 5.13's.

That's what I'm hoping for, along with maybe 8 to 9 mpg instead of 7.

Oh yes, after I get break in miles on it, I"ll hook up the trailer and see how it does.

I don't know about that...I averaged 7.15 mpg on my last trip pulling the camper. That was from Dalton, Ga to Tuscaloosa, Al and back. Tom pulls a heavier trailer than I do and reports around 9 mpg though so it's definitely possible. At 265k, mine may be a little tired.
Let us know how well that Ected works, I have been considering one since it is one of the few options we have for the Dana 50 front diff. I mainly want to know how it feels if you are running in 2wd with the hubs locked, since I do that allot.

i was thinking of him when I said that, I have 203k on mine. We shall see....

Good thought. I'd like it to be a little tighter and more responsive.

I had an Ected in my Toyota crawler front D60. Loved it. That truck had drive slugs instead of locking hubs, and in 2wd with those, it wasn't noticeable since I didn't lock the front diff. I guess I never locked the front diff while in 2WD, since, well, that would be silly.
it drove just like an open diff in 2WD.
Good points on the MPGs guys, I'm only at 118K miles, so maybe that is one factor in my towing mileage. I'm also a Hyper-Miler in my daily driver and some of that carries over to when I'm towing in the EX, I do cruise at 65/70 MPH (PSL or a few over) but try to manage the throttle on acceleration and climbing grades always with an eye on the instant MPG display and I coast (nothing crazy, just let off the gas and coast in gear with the engine on!) when appropriate, like when approaching red lights and stop signs, no need to accelerate towards a stop!
When I had the 4.88s and 32" tires (the deepest effective ratio I've run) the EX got 9.0 MPG pulling the 9,500lb TH back home to Philly from Savannah GA, that's a pretty flat mostly coastal route with a few cities (which usually slows things down some) along the way.
