Help fixing air gap

2005 F350 DRW

I am having air gap issues with my truck. Got underneath and verified I’m at about 0.65. Truck blows cold for about 5 mins and then warm.

I found a cool website with instructions on how to fix it, and being a rookie mechanic I ran into an immediate issue. The directions say to turn the ignition on without starting truck with the AC on, and this will pull the plate in so I can remove the 8mm nut. For some reason I can’t get it to engage so it just spins the compressor pulley. What am I doing wrong here?

I hd a guy rig it with a zip tie last week when it was 113 out, but it didn’t hold so now trying to fix it myself. He confirmed it was an air gap issue. So if it does get cold to begin with then wouldn’t that mean the plate is being pulled in? What do I do now?? I’d like to learn more about my truck so I don’t have to run to a professional every time I have an issue.

Thank you,

Don’t know about that internet trick, but when I did mine I used a flat bar similar to a file to hold the plate while I unfastened and fastened the bolt while adjusting the gap.

Example for when tightening.

Thank you sir. I’ll give that a shot. There’s not much room up there for an adult hand. I could barely get the ratchet in there.

If you have a long square shanked flat screwdriver it can work. I think I have some 1/2" square stock at one point. Yeah, not much room.

Generally, that doesn't work on the newer PCM-controlled clutch systems. If the engine isn't running and all other operational conditions satisfied, the PCM won't command the clutch to engage.

You can buy a tool at your local parts store that's made for the job of holding the plate, but I usually just use a screwdriver as was suggested previously.
