I bought a used '94 F150, and I'm trying to figure out how the spare tire carrier is supposed to be fastened. Naturally, there is no owner's manual with the truck either, and nobody I know has an F150. Around here, I could get shot crawling around under somebody's truck trying to check out their spare.
What I need to know is how the part of the spare tire carrier closest to the rear bumper is supposed to fasten. Mine has an eye bolt through the carrier with a cut off bolt through the eye bolt. That can't be how it came from the factory. Can someone describe what is supposed to be there?
The eye bolt turns so that you can lower the whole assembly to the point where you can slide the eye bolt thru the bigger opening & lower the assembly & spare tire together . It may be someone put the other bolt thru the eye bolt to discourage anyone from stealing the tire . It likely had a nut on the bolt that rusted & couldnt be removed so someone cut the bolt . There should be a long bolt thru the center of the carrier that secures the tire to the carrier with one of those big plastic nuts to tighten it once the spare is in place .
