How should you store an engine?

so i know this is the ford forum but i just picked up a fully built ready to go 12v cummins for my project, its gonna be a while until i get around to actually putting it in and i don’t really have any where to store it, ive heard that storing it outside is a bad idea but thought about maybe putting down a tarp, putting the engine on a pallet and that on top of the tarp, laying another tar over that and staking it down tevnt style, and then building a box from plywood with some airflow underneath might be substantial..... ive also heard of storing it in a container of oil but i dont have the recorces to get large amounts of oil lol

i can certainly get a storage unit if necessary, any other steps i should take such as putting some type of rust prevntion in / on the engine?
