Rebuild 300 six
#2
I would not use the cheap t.gear sets. I have. After only 50 miles I thought I had a rod knock. Buy at least the comp cams gears and a decent Felpro head gasket. If you have an pre efi 300, grind off the raised bits around the bolt holes on the oil pan, and use an efi era one piece pan gasket. It is worth its weight in gold.

The early pan had raised ridges around each bolt hole (maybe 1/16" in height) that was used to align and help seal the cork gasket.
After 89, the pan was perfectly flat, and they switched to a single one piece silicone gasket that has compression rings built into it. The silicone gasket is much better sealing, but to use it, you have to either grind off all of the raised ridges, or buy a new pan that doesn't have them.

I have not bought any engine kits from ebay, but have bought several from Northern Auto. My '79 DD w/300 has their parts in it......
Pretty reasonable and been around for years. FWIW....
I also agree on the oil pan gasket mod

Are we talking a rebuild kit with pistons, rings, bearings, ect? The main issue there would be knowing all of your clearances/ what needs machined. My 300 had a 14 thousandths taper to the cylinders. They had to be taken .30 over to fix them. One main bearing journal had scoring and required it be machined .10 under. I order my kits through my machine shop. I may pay a few $ more, but he orders everything I need, at all of the right sizes.
