2018 250

2017 F250. 6k ish miles. 87 Tow-Daily
So it took a little while to finally get my tune, apparently they needed to get access to the file. Got the tune yesterday and loaded it up today. Here are my impressions.

-Truck feels easier to rev if that makes any sense. Most likely a combination of shifting strategy and throttle input changes. The "dead petal" feeling is gone. That really bugged me in stock form.
-Shifting strategy in tow-haul is TOTALLY different. It doesn't really want to let it get below 2k RPM. Holds gears much longer, usually until around 3.5-4 during my test drive. Seems like it will make all the difference towing our 8.5kish Airstream.
-Not sure if I can feel any power difference. I think it just comes down to the improvements in everything else. (why I bought it in the first place.)

I have a trip to New Mexico mountains later this week pulling the trailer. We shall she how it does. I also have the 89-91 tunes as well. Not sure if I will mess with those at all though. Pretty happy how it is.

Thanks for sharing your review. Look forward to hearing what you think after your trip. Are you out of warranty? Or just gambling the dealership not calling it out or noticing during any future warranty repairs?

I'm curious how tuners can make so little hp/tq with a gas motor that I've heard was "detuned" ? Surely there is more untapped power to be had that FMC dials back for reliability and longevity purposes.

A gas truck is detuned with less aggressive cams or they lowered the compression ratio, not really stuff a tuner can change. All a tuner can do to increase power is change the timing or make it run leaner.

Is the shifting much different without tow/haul mode on?

That is a FAIR review; honest and accurate. Best gains are in throttle feel and shifting. Power gains are undetectable by the seat of the pants.

Sorry guys.

Got back from our trip last week. Airstream loaded for that long of a trip was actually around 8800 lbs. Around 500 lbs of stuff in the bed.

Truck did great. Once I got over my fear of letting it rev that is.

The differences of shift pattern worked great around 70% of the time. Once I got into the real mountains however it was best to put it in M mode and select your own.

I have 3.73's. It cruised in 5th quite a bit (The tune in tow haul doesn't shift to 6th until 73ish.) Moderate hills and it down shifted to 4th. Even bigger hills and it needed 3rd to get up. In general, once the truck shifts to 3rd, its going to do anything you ask it to. Never had a problem keeping speed. Ran between 65-70 most of the way.

One thing I noticed is to get any sort of good engine braking I needed to be in 2nd. That means I needed to slow down to 55ish before I went down any of the steep passes. Once in 2nd it held great.

Overall, I'm very happy with the truck and happy with the tune.
