Engine runs really rough, possible cause?
Hey everybody,
I've got a '68 F-100 that recently got a "new" 360 from a '74 f250. The only modifications are an aluminum intake, edelbrock 1406, long tube headers, msd coil, and plug wires.
After the installation it wouldn't start, just backfired like crazy, the distributor was 180 off so we pulled it out and installed it correctly. It'll fire right up now but it runs really rough, and won't stay running. (won't really idle, have to be on the gas a little to keep it running for more than a couple seconds) Timing should be close enough to run pretty well, any idea what the issue could be? My only other guess would be fuel delivery but the carb was recently rebuilt.
Any help is greatly appreciated, I'm 16 years old and have very limited knowledge when it comes to classic vehicles

What do you mean by "new" engine? New to you or rebuilt? If rebuilt, who rebuilt it? Who rebuilt the carb and why?Did you hear it running in the donor truck?
Here is a few things to check.
1. Make sure wire from ignition switch is on the "+" coil terminal. "-" goes to Dizzy (distributor).
2. Double check plug wires to be in the correct firing order. Note below Ford numbers their cylinders different than Chebbie and Chrysler.
3. Make sure there is gas in the carb. With engine NOT running look down the throat of the carb. Move the throttle back and forth a couple times. Look for the accelerator pump nozzles to be squirting two strong squirts.
4. If there is old gas in the tank, drain it and add new gas.
