Over the past couple months I have noticed some abnormal behavior with the regen cycle. Regen has been cutting off about 40% then drops to about 20% with the residual heat. Soot would then build back up quicker than in the past, especially when towing a trailer with EGTs running plenty warm for a passive regen.
Several people indicated similar behavior during the winter but I did not have that problem.
Anyway, I ran a static regen using FORScan this evening. DPF was at 95% when I started the truck. It climbed to 101% while it warmed up. FORScan static regen started as it should (note, this was my first time doing a static regen). It ran for about 5 minutes then failed due to an “unspecified abort criteria”. Then, the soot level dropped to zero on the screen and 12% per forscan.
Something obviously isnt right.. No codes or anything to diagnose.
Ideas?
Do I reset the learned DPF levels and force the PCM to relearn?
Or leave it alone and see if a code pops up eventually?
I don’t want to delete at this point but if the DPF does fail and the extended warranty wont cover it, then the rocket will fall off. Just money I dont want to spend.
The original post is a example of a situation which once again leads me NOT to download the ForScan program to my laptop. So much hand wringing and concern over a system that 99% of the time takes care of itself in the background. I now realize why Ford has taken some gauge options off the dashboard. Yes, some of the ForScan options are interesting to change but for me I do not need the drama of worrying constantly about regeneration and filter percentages. I am glad my 4 diesel tractors do not display all this information and run perfectly all the time without me knowing what they are doing behind the scenes.
Yes, ignorance is bliss is one method of maintenance. Others prefer to be proactive with maintenance and knowing what is going on with the vehicle. Trending is one such method and it involves tracking what happens and looking for changs in normal behavior.
Its really awsome to know that your tractors run perfectly. Thanks for hijacking the thread.
Trash hauler:
Information in the wrong hands is dangerous. So glad you feel comfortable changing the parameters that Ford engineers installed in your truck.
Thread title said it all Potential Problem. So you need to fix a problem that doesn't exist.
Just saying
