Hi,
my brake lights are not working because I keep blowing the fuse called the "Brake Pedal Position Switch". I do have tailights and reverse lights, but not brake lights. The fuse blows after about 40 miles, I think...but I did notice the other day that if I do not press firmly on the brake pedal when starting, then the fuse blows, -I think. Does this sound similiar to anything. Turn signals and everthing else work, so I don't know where to start or what to do. I am having a difficult time trying to find the short.
Thanks
Well obviously you have a short in the brake light circuit, and since you dont blow it until the brakes are pressed it is on the ground side of the switch. Brake Pedal Position Switch is just a fancy term for brake light switch mounted on the pedal. Look for broken, chaffed wiring all the way back and especially if you have a trailer harness. Ive seen many trailer harness shorting out fuses. Any chaffed wiring shorted to the frame or other ground circuit may cause your problem and dont overlook the highmount brake lamp assembly as well. It could even be a shorted bulb on rare occasion.
if you have a 80 series f 150 check the wiring at the light fixutes themselfs I have seen the wiring rub bare there on three different trucks from the 80 series 150.
the last one had me chasing down the entire brake wiring system. I even removed the tailer wiring kit and still could not find it. then one day i pulled the lenses and the wiring out and it turned out to be an intermittant short at the fixture for the bulb. there was dirt and grim in the housing and the short would jump accross the build up. carbon trail...i replaced the fixture from the connector up and the problem went away
Sorry, it is a 99 Ranger XLT extended cab 4x4. I took it to a chevy dealer because it was the only shop within an hour of me and they replaced the multi function switch because it was "fried" (in their words). They checked the brake switch and said it was okay. Now three days later the fuse has blown again and I took it back to them and they said they didn't know what to do. I think I am going to have it take it to a Ford shop because it is becoming out of hand. I am going to check the light fixtures though because I don't think the shop or I thought to look there.
I have narrowed it down to bloing whenever I press on the brake. So this certainly helps. Anymore suggestions?
