There's a metal retainer on it and I think I don't wanna break it even though the new switch didn't come with one. Retainer sold separately, does notcome with the switch.
The retainer (13A629 in pic) has prongs on it that retain it to the pedal. The prongs snap off, the retainer either dangles or falls off the pedal taking the switch (13480) along with it.

The problem I'm having is that when your foot is off the brake it drops ever so slightly, 1/8 of an inch maybe, but just enough for the brake lights to stay on.
i bought a new switch and it came with 2 nuts instead of the original retainer. I just have to decide what set up to use.

The retainer is threaded, how are you going to install the switch and then adjust it without using the retainer?

i don't understand your question. Don't you see in the picture that the new switches come with 2 nuts to lock against each other when tightened. You don't need the retainer if
Using the new mounting system. So my original concern, should I use the retainer or the the double nut system, what would be more dependable?
You're way over thinking this....use the same mounting hardware that you took off the old switch if that makes you more comfortable, if not, use the new mounting hardware, either will work just fine.
The more prudent point is being overlooked.... do your brake lights work after the fix?

The hole in the pedal is not threaded, the retainer is. So how can you thread the switch onto the pedal since it has no threads?
This was such a simple fix, I just like things done original and correct.
for the record, I unscrewed the brake light switch and went to screw the new one in.
The threads on the original retainer didn't match the overseas replacement switch so I was forced to use the 2 nut system .
Overall, its an under 5 minute job!
