I picked it up in Benton city. 70 is about as fast as I felt comfortable going. The trailer had a little bit of sway to it which is pretty unnerving. Should post pics today.
Man you need to slow down you blew right past my house.... lol
depending how you came through there is a good chance of that as I'm only about a mile off the hwy in Pasco WA.... curious to see what truck you picked up, if it's a craigslist truck I've probably looked at it many times...
Ok, here's the first pics of my latest find. I think I'll call her "Ginger" because that is what Ford called the special color of the Explorer Special only seat upholstery. I had to spend a few hours this morning removing the hideous remnants of the "Convoy" movie inspired accessories. This thing had a c.b. radio with front fender mounted antenna, c.b. power booster, underhood mounted speaker, aluminum running boards, 3 internal auxiliary c.b. speakers, steering wheel spinner, floor mounted cup holder etc.
Lower fender rust looks fixable.
These appear to be the originally mounted mirrors because there are no extra holes.
Body is amazingly straight.
This sliding rear window is listed as part of the Explorer Special package.
I bet that paint would buff out pretty well.
Old school factory clearance lights.
Here's the other dent that I've found so far. I wouldn't be surprised if I find more.
Toolbox, and the key actually works!
It's all there, carb's in the bed of course.
All the a.c. brackets, tags, hoses etc are intact and unmolested. Amazing.
Notice the old Prestone heater core flush fitting in one of the heater hoses. They sold a million of those things.
Oh yeah, they're staying.
I'm very excited to see these locking gas caps, both tanks have them and the key actually works for both of them. The fuel in the tanks doesn't smell like turpentine at all. It may even burn!
Here's the auxiliary tank matching cap. I bet these are original aftermarket.
Pretty bad rust.
This one's even worse. I don't know how it holds air. Got a line on some 16 inchers if the guy will ever call me back.
It's well lived in.
Here's the Ginger Explorer Special only seat upholstery.
I've not seen this door panel trim design on anything yet. I'd live to see other trucks that have this.
The coveted, Factory installed a.c. assembly. This will be an extensive project all by itself.
The headliner and especially the trim is in amazingly good condition. Of course there are probably holes for mounting that speaker.
Aftermarket radio but at least the bezel is intact.
More stuff to undue. I think every truck in those days had one of these brake controllers.
Tank looks original.
Shows 73,000 but who knows.
From what I understand, the earlier Explorer Specials didn't have the logo on the bed.
I'm not sure the bed is going to make the cut. Then again, I've seen guys on this site work magic with rusty sheet metal. We'll see.
This is one of the two dents that I've found so far.
Front factory bumper guards and embarrasing old school fog lights. At least they mounted them underneath the bumper so the holes won't be visible.
Good Find mrpotatohead! "Ginger" seems to be in pretty good shape. Only two minor dents- that's amazing-, of course there has to be some rust. You wouldn't want to spend your weekend just waxing Ginger. I sent you an email.
The outside mirrors may have been there for a long time, but they're aftermarket as is the step bumper.
Genuine Ford Western Junior Camper mirrors with "3rd steady-rest arm" use completely different mounting arms/brackets, the mirror head has 3 vertical embossed lines.

in your opinion do you think those were a dealer replacement? with no extra holes someone went to some trouble to find ones that matched the existing holes or welded and repainted very well. Ether way I would be happy, based on my 4 trucks nobody ever went to the trouble to weld up the holes... "no big deal just keep drilling more"...lol
Once again Number Dummy, I know this. My point was that I'm surprised that the installer used the original mounting holes. Thanks for your continued negative comments. I have a set of oem mirrors for it just waiting to be installed someday. Time for your nap isn't it?

Yes it has some rust, the rear cab corners will need some attention as will the floor pans. The cab mounts seem to be okay so far. The bed has some serious rust in the left to right rails that it sits on the frame with. That's why I might be looking for another bed.
Thanks ND for the relevant information yet again.
Nothing negative in what your wrote either.
But the same cannot be said for potatohead. Was that really necessary?

There was nothing negative in my post. You said these appear to be the originally mounted mirrors because there's no extra holes. All I said was that they were aftermarket.
The only one with a negative attitude is you with your wise azzed smarmy comments.
