1950's Ford

Hello. I'm considering purchasing a 1950's model Toro Golf Course Tractor. It has a Ford, flat head 6 cylinder engine and a ford rear end, with a 4 speed transmission. Any insight on identifying the motor, rear end, and transmission (numbers, id plates, etc.) and possible sources for parts?

Probably an H or G series 6 cylinder.
on top of the head towards the front look for casting # 7HA. The distributor would be on the drivers side of block. G series would have distributor on the front of the engine.

Trans case passenger side a couple inches down from top will have casting # maybe 59t or ??
the 4 speed non synchro trans.

Post up some pictures of what youve got and we can help identify.

Josh

In the unlikely event it has the Big Six engine, it will have casting number 8MTH on the cylinder head. Pictures would be a great help.

I don't have a lot of photos since I haven't bought it yet. I'm trying to see what I'm getting into. I appreciate the help.

That doesn't look like any flat head motors I've seen, that's an overhead engine 215 likely

Any ideas how to confirm that or where to get parts?

That looks like my engine. I think it is a 223 OHV. In a 215 the distributor, oil filter, and coil are further back.

It's an overhead because there is a valve cover, I'm not up on my engines but believe because the distributor is more forward it is a 215 cu in. There should be casting numbers on the block and someone here will know for sure. Numberdummy (Bill) is one of the best sources. Give it a bit of time and you'll get your answer..

I thought the 223 had the distributor closer to the center of the block..guess I'm mistaken

Parts for the engine should not be a problem at all. What other parts might you need?

That must be a beast of a lawn mower. I'd like to see more of it.
