I have a '92 351W that developed an intermittent oil pressure problem. I pulled the pan to check the screen & oil pump, and found a pretty good buildup of crap. Not as bad as what I found under a valve cover, though. There's a coating of soft tar-like stuff about 1/8" thick on everything non-moving.
The engine's coming out for other reasons, but I don't want to tear it down completely. It has 106K miles and is a good runner, and has never leaked or burned oil.
My question is, do I leave that crud buildup alone so I don't knock a bunch of it loose, or do I try to clean it off since I have the pan off already? I don't want to pull the heads off unless I have to to get the broken exhaust maniifold bolts out. But I don't like the idea of running a dirty engine, either.
Well, I would take the motor out put it on a engine stand, Clean as much out of the pan and valve covers as you can, lightly bolt up the pan and valve covers and fill the crank case up with diesel fuel and prime the system for awhile thru the distributor. That should help clear out any oil gallies that may be plugged. You may have to repeat if it is really bad.
