Adaptive steering

been browsing the lots looking at 2018 f450’s. Just curious, what is adaptive steering? Is it reliable? If given the choice, would you get it or not?

It’s an electric motor and gear system housed in the actual steering wheel that efectively changes the multiplier of the gear to the steering box. Requires fewer turns to get to the locks at parking lot speed; normal ratio at highway.

I ordered it. seems to be especially nice on a cclb confit like the 450s would likely be.

The only super duty’s I’ve driven had the adaptive steering. That being said I was underwhelmed with it. It may be better than without, but I imagine you only notice the difference driving one with and one without back to back.

I wanted the tow tech package, so it was included with mine.

so evidently I have this and didn’t know about it. So when exactly does it come into play for me?

Well, my guess is that you'd be "whelmed" if you drove one without it. Great for low speed turns and tight places.

It’s active all the time, so what you’ve been experiencing is what you get. In other words; it’s in play.

Anyone know if this could be added to a 17 F250?

Adaptive steering

Have it on 2018 F350 DRW and would not be without it. Truck tracts on highway better then any other truck that I have driven. Pull 23,000 lb 5th wheel and truck handles that with flying colors.

The ratio speedup is only in effect at parking lot speeds. It saves a lot of wheel cranking when maneuvering into a parking space or when backing a trailer. When towing a trailer, it slows down the steering when driving at speed to help avoid trailer sway.

I towed a 36 foot 5th wheel 18,000 miles over 7 months and found the adaptive steering to be helpful.

I was skeptical about it at first, but wouldn't be without it now. It's seamless so most people don't really know it's there, perhaps that's why some don't think too much of it. I'm in and out of different vehicles constantly though, so it's very pronounced to me when I'm in a vehicle without it. There is a spot I frequent where I have to go from lock to lock twice in quick succession to get through, I remember it vividly in my 2012 because it was almost comical trying to spin the wheel around, but it's a non-issue in the 2017.

As a rookie, I haven’t had enough experience in my SD. But I haven read several instances of guys adding a steering stabilizer to their SD. So far I haven’t had any steering issues. Could this be because of the adaptive steering I have?

I have it. If I ever buy another Super Duty and I'm paying cash, I will opt out of that option. As others stated perfectly, "underwhelmed" is the perfect adjective.
