I'm getting ready to go look at at 1973 f100 with a 360 and a 3 speed on the floor. 3.25 Rear end. I've driven several different engine tranny combinations, but all the manuals have been 4 speeds but never a 3.
I'm looking for a daily(ish) driver, and will require some highway miles, so I'm wondering how that engine/tranny combo will work. I know the 360 is more of a torque/pulling motor, so I'm a bit leery this will not be pleasant for my needs especially with the 3 speed and rear end gearing.
Would appreciate any thoughts, as this truck ticks all the other boxes of what I'm looking for. Thanks!

If you will be towing anything you may find a 4th gear helpful but if not then there is nothing at all wrong with the 360 and 3 speed. Ford sold millions of these trucks so they must be "drivable". I had a 68 F-100 with a 352 and 3 on the tree and was very roadworthy, especially at freeway speeds. I think you'll be happy with it.
The 3 speeds and 4 speeds have the same top gear ratio 1:1. For highway cruising no difference between the two types. Most of the 4 speeds have a super low 1'st gear for crawling over rough ground or getting a really heavy trailer rolling. For a 150 in your application I do not see much benefit for the extra gear. If the 3 speed is column shift you may love it or not. A personal preference.
A 3.25 rear should be a good highway gear also. About as good as it gets for highway cruising with a 70's PU while still retaining some decent acceleration.
