DONT SAY SOME THING IF YOU DONT NO WHAT THE HECK YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT
It won't be 180 off...if the piston is at the top (or 10 degrees before top) and you point to the #1 plug, that's your compression stroke with a 10 degree advance.
YOU CAN BE 180 OUT TO MAKE 100% SURE THAT YOU ARE SETING IT IN AT THE RIGHT SPOT ,TAKE THE VALVE COVER OFF ,PLUG OUT OF NUMBER 1, THEN TURN MOTOR UNTIL YOUSEE THE POINTER AT 10* AND INTAKE HAS OPENED AND CLOSED . NOW YOU HAVE BOTH VALVES CLOSED. AND PISTON SHOULD BE ALMOST AL THE WAY TO THE TOP . NOW PUT IT POINTING TO NUMBER 1
Originally posted by superhooperduty just wondering, couldn't you just turn crank till #1 is at tdc and check the timing marks on the damper? shouldn't that put you on the correct mark?
No, it is a 4 cycle engine. it take two rotations to get back to the compression stroke
Intake, compression, power, exhuast
180 down 180up 180dwn 180up = 720
720 degrees divided by 360 degrees = 2 rotations.
That also mean that the damper goes around twice as well, It is possible to be 180 degrees out. (and it really messes things up). The only way that would work is if you took off the dizzy cap and made sure that the rotor is pointed at #1, but if you don't have the dizzy in, you can't do that. You have to feel the air rushing out of the spark plug hole on #1 to be sure that your on the compression stroke. Then line up the timing mark and install the dizzy pointing to #1. That is the proper way to reset timing.

thanks fishin1976, i now see the error of my ways, with you, so if i know which is the intake valve, before i put on the valve covers i can tell tdc of the compression stroke, if the intake valve just closes, correct, of course if i don't install the distributor at that time and the engine gets turned while bolting up, yets say the flex plate, i'm back at square one. and thanks for taking the time to correct me.
But if you just stick your finger in the hole and feel air rushing out it could still be on the exhaust stroke could'nt it?
I just do that myself and if it spits back when cranking I pull dizzy and turn it 180
yes sir, i guess it could be the exhaust stroke. thanks, sorry to all i guess i opened up a whole can of worms by not fiquring out this before i typed up my two bits worth, sorry.
