Turn signal issues.

Hi everyone.
I'm new here. Quick break down. I recently bought a 1977 F150 4x4, same year I was born 😀. It had brake light issues. Fixed, but due to the bonehead that owned it before me didn't understand how that switch worked I wasted $12. Anyways so I've been reading some of the posts with similar issues and I'm at a loss. So far I've replaced all sockets, turn signal switch in the column, turn signal relay, all bulbs and the headlight switch. Rockauto is a great place to get stuff (unpaid plug). I've got no clue where rlse to go next. Ive also replaced the fuse in the box.
So my next question is What the hell should I look for next? I've checked some of the grounds and the lights are all the same brightness and get the same volts to them, but what's weird is I still have hazard lights. I'm at a loss and I want Darlene to be 100% street legal (hand signals are a pain) Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Will

Hmmm. Wiring? Sounds like it's good. Are you seeing any other evidence that someone else has been in there messing around, like you saw with the brake light switch?
Maybe someone replaced the switch before you, and didn't get the wires back into the connector correctly?

Are you getting any turn signals? Fronts? Indicators in the gauge cluster? Does the flash relay click?

Here's some pics from when I changed my TS switch, so you can compare pin positions and wire colors:

Wires along top row of connector.

And the three wires along the bottom row.

Another thing I've seen cause the turn signals to not function is the Hazard switch not being all the way in the "off" position. It doesn't sound like that is your problem, but maybe something in your column is blocking the switch from pushing all the way in. Or perhaps the problem is in the Hazard circuit wiring.

And welcome to FTE!

Thanks for the response and the pictures to reference. I'm gonna dig into it after work. I replaced the flasher relay yesterday and it clicks when the hazards are on.

Unless I missed it, you haven't said what issue you're having. Anecdotally, my blinkers were a little wonky and started working great after I unplugged the ribbon cable on the back of the gauge cluster and plugged it back in a couple times.

I'll give that a try. All the turn signal switch wiring is correct so I'll try the cluster ribbon.

Still puzzled but there is some improvements. I in plugged the ribbon and wiped them with a dry towel and plugged it back in. Hooked the battery back up and now the arrows blink when the hazards are on but still now signals. I'm gonna try some electrical parts cleaner spray on all the connections and see what happens. It's just driving me crazy because the hazards blink perfectly and the signals are being stubborn. I wanna drive my dang truck and not sweat $#!&.

So far I've replaced all sockets,
Did you use aftermarket El cheepo's??? check to make sure the wires leading to the sockets are fully seated and your spices are correct and not crossed..

turn signal switch in the column,
Did you just replace the cam? check to make sure your connection are good, or the entire wiring harness inside the column??

turn signal relay,
Double check wires on the OEM connector .try switching Hazard relay and turn signal relay to verify they both work..

all bulbs and the headlight switch.
Rockauto is a great place to get stuff (unpaid plug). some of us already knew that

I've got no clue where rlse to go next. I've also replaced the fuse in the box.

I've checked some of the grounds Check them all!!! Including the ones up front under the rubber "flaps" on the radiator core support

Another thing you may want to try is checking your wiring under "Darlene" from front to back and make sure there are no PO (previous Owners) Splices along the frame rails especially by the back bumper for an aftermarket trailer pigtail
Good luck and keep us posted!

TWO different flashers: Both are round with two prongs, but the 4 way flasher is a H/D unit, has a louder CLICK.

Location of both flashers shown in pic:

Is it possible the yellow and black being crushed could be the problem? There's no wires exposed. I've gone over the grounds again and sanded all contact points. We've had crappy weather so i haven't gotten the xhance to crawrl around under the truck. I did remove a ghetto trailer pigtail. They used a power cord for a lamp as some of the wiring. 😒

I also tested both relays by switching them and they both work fine.

Ok so I'm at a total loss for ideas here. I've gone over 90% of the wiring and tested continuity on a crap ton of switches and wiring. They all test good, even the wire I kinda crushed. But the only thing really throwing me for a loop is why the hazards work perfect and the turn signals aren't. So here's the catch though, the Haynes manual I bought says there should be a directional fuse in the block and there is a blank spot where it should be, but there isn't any markings in white saying directional. So yeah I'm at a loss on where to look next or what to do next. Any input would be greatly appreciated and if anyone with a '77 could post a picture of there fuse block would be awesome. Thanks again

Find out which wire operates into and out of the turn signals in the steering column via the TSS.

Power up the turn signal in one of the directions and follow it with a test light all the way to the relay holder.

(Maybe the blank fuse is part of the circuit !?) (Maybe the ribbon contacts are still suspect?)

Check that power not only enters the relay holder, but actually powers up the relay too.

The Haynes manual wiring diagrams should be a great help with this.

Hopefully the fault lies in the unchecked 10% (somewhere in the spaghetti behind the dash ?).

Best of luck !

Or with the dodgy trailer wiring you removed. That's an area of the wiring to be very suspicious of, in light of that discovery.

Sounds like you have a good idea of how to find the fault, so there's not much to do but keep digging and check every inch of the circuit.

Another thing you could do would be to disintermediate the switch, and manually connect the proper wires to see if by chance you get TS operation that way.
