Angry Need emissions help.........

I have a 1970 F100 with a 360, went to emissions today and failed the CO idle test. Everything else passed. I need 5.00 but I got a 6.52, I have changed the plugs, plug wires, dist cap, rotor, checked all vaccum lines, set the timing to 6 deg BTC and changed the thermostat and cleaned the radiator. I guess the only thing left is my lean and air adjustment on my carb and I have no idea on how to do that....any suggestions?????

turn each idle air adj screw in (cw) untill it just starts to run rough, then back out (ccw) about a turn and a quarter. Do one at a time and it should solve it.

I wouldn't go that far(back out). I turn them in till rough then come back out 1/4 at a time (both sides) just enough to smooth it out.

I usually tuen them in until the engine runs rough >
Then go CCW >count the revolutions until the engine runs rough again > and splitting the difference turn it back in.

If the screw turns CCW 1 1/2 from rough idle to rough idle
.
It gets turned back CW in 3/4 of a turn.

That's too much work. Just back them out until it smooths out. By turning them in, you get it lean enough to miss , then open them up until it quits missing and you are set..
meeseaz, where are you at? bring it by and I'll set it up for you.

I also find with carb adjustments, it's good to make a quarter turn and then give the engine time to settle out, like 10 seconds. Don't turn the screw and expect to stop when the engine smooths out, you've probably gone too far at that point. Quarter turn, take a break, quarter turn, take a break...

For emissions test, Stepman's advice is right on. When I was required top have a smog test in California, I even set the distributor tiiming to 0 degrees. Once I've passed the test, I then would drive home and re-set everything to best running conditions.
During my learning stages, several times during a smog test, my low emissions were too high. I just turned the idle screws inward another 1/4 turn right on the spot which cured the problem.

You did not mention oil change. Fresh oil makes a difference in emissions. Good Luck TC

I second it- change the oil AND the PCV valve.

That will put you over the top.

Have you passed yet? I also add a gallon of denatured alcohol to the fuel and set the idle high.
