I was told this ranger I bought had a 302, all I know is it has points (for the moment) and a straight fan, passenger side exhaust manifold is straight rear dump. How can I ID this engine for year and what plugs do you guys recommend?
normal freeze plugs and 6 bolt as I remember, I'm just trying to come up with a year and vehicle to tell parts houses when I need engine parts i.e. spark plugs, I put on a hotter coil yesterday, I'll have new wires, cap, rotor and a pertronix ignitor by the end of the week so I may as well do plugs too. Truck was parked for two years so I'd imagine the plugs are pretty grungy and from the looks of everything else, not well maintained.
most parts will have a number similar to this on them
d0zz-7528-aa or something like that
D0 would mean the part was originally made in 1970
D1 = 1971
E0= 1980
F0=1990
C0=1960 and so on
If a lot of the parts have near the same date on them you can come up with an idea on what year range the engine is.
Also if the plugs are really big such as an autolite 45 then it is most likely from the 70's
If the are small such as an autolite 765 it would be a late 70's early 80's unless someone has changed heads.
