Has anyone had any problems with the aftermarket tailgate assists. I recently installed one and it wasn't as advertised. Tailgate assist (Kit DZ203) is not built to handle the weight of a 1999 Ford Super Duty F-350 tailgate in my opinion. The gas charged shock supplied allows the tailgate to fall too rapidly and at the end of its travel, causes the lower ball stud to point upward, deforming and loosening the nutcert in the tailgate. This happens after only 3-5 openings. I had to remove this part as it is useless. Yes the nutcert was installed tight enough.

What did the place that sold this to you say when you contacted them?
Not sure if a 2012 F350 tailgate is the same weight or less as yours, but I've had my tailgate assist on for about two years and zero problems. Still works like a champ. Maybe a bad strut or something else..

That's great. Do you remember what brand it is? Thanks
I just installed mine the other day. Mine is DeeZee brand. My tailgate has the tailgate step and is really heavy. I have not had any issues out of my assist at all. I think it works great. Tailgate does fall quickly about a quarter of the way down, then the shock catches and slowly lowers it all the way down.

Maybe I'll have to try the DeeZee brand. I don't like having to catch the tailgate every time I open it.
I'm on my second one, the first one lasted just under 3 years before losing its effect. The new one isn't as good at damping as the first one was when new.
I put on two at the same time to reduce the strain on a single shock and shock mount. These new tailgates are heavy with that step.
I actually bought 2 this time so that I've always got a spare, I'm in the UK so shipping is about the same for one or two. I did think about putting both on, I guess that it mounts the same on the passenger side?

It mounts the same, but more work is required. I had to open up one of the mounting holes to fit the bracket through. The other "drawback" is the passenger side is the side with the open tailgate hinge. You have to put a retainer on this hinge or the tailgate pops off due to the shock. You can use the retainer that people put on the hinge to keep the tailgate from being stolen. I used the hose clamp method.
