I guess I didn't look hard enough earlier, I found a replacement sending unit at Dennis Carpenter for 50 bucks!

I was actually referring to the fact that the stock sending unit connected to an aftermarket gauge will show your tank level going up and down in correlation to the fuel sloshing around in the tank, especially at the lower levels. Seems that there is a stabilizing effect when the stock gauge is used.
