OK so a multitude of questions. A friend and I are looking at a F-100 truck. I don't know what year it is, how do I tell? The guy im buying it from seems to work on trucks and sell them for a living, however this one is in running condition but not much else. He wants $200 and we get to drive away with it. So one question would be that he says that there is a 309 in it? yes no? not possible? and also what years (once I find it's year) will work with it. Theres also 2 F-150's outside of town, neither probably in runnable condition that I could get for parts trucks. Another question would be is/are there any, do any 4x4 F-100's exist? IM really buying this truck to learn some mechanics before I buy a 4x4 truck so it's a beater but were probably going to fix it up too. Thanks -myers
To the right of this page is a link to galleries - click on that, then click on year (which will list them in order by year), then click on "last" at the bottom of that page and it'll take you to p 267. Start working backward and you'll find pictures of the truck you're looking at sooner or later.
Or you could post the vin and we might be able to decipher it.
You're $200 truck might have a 390 in it, but not a 309 unless it's a bored out 302?
F150's didn't show up until the mid-70's - 75 model year I think.
Yes, there have been 4x4's about as long as there have been F100. The earliest were M-H conversions.
Seems I recall the truck ID question coming up fairly regularly. I'm also inspired by our new 1957-1960 Truck Info web site set up by our own Backroads Jack. So, I tried to make a very small contribution to organizing 1948-1956 truck information by putting some images from Ford literature together on a web page. Here is the link:
I apologize gentelman, though I thank you for your help. After looking..... and buying the truck I discovered after looking in the door that it's a 73 F-100. Engine size I don't know. I will post the vin numbers on that forum. -myers
