So I have my 352 timed to 8* btc with vac adv. Unhooked. And vac adv is hooked up to ported side of carb. I put hei dist on it and edelbrock 600 carb on it. Mild cam. Can't figure why when I accelerate hard engine makes a "putt" noise then quicks but fires back up when letting off accelerator. Should I do less initial advance? Or what should I look into.
I'll take a stab at this but I think it will require more information. Going on what you describe it sounds like you may be starving for fuel.
Make sure your float levels are correct. Check fuel pressure 3-5 psi. Those Edelbrock's are easy to tune but you may have to purchase a calibration kit at some point.
Hook the vacuum advance to full manifold vacuum. Ported vacuum is for smog motors.
Ok now 20 questions. What cam?
Which HEI? Did you remove the resistor wire? If that distributor is from Performance Distributors and set up for your engine I would say there is nothing wrong with it. But if it is a $69.95 Chevrolet looking made in China POS from e-bay it may never work right. Just my opinion other folks may disagree.
Check your idle vacuum after you move that vacuum line. Anything less than 10 inches will require some serious tuning on the distributor and the carb.
