Which Wiring harness?

Most of us use after market sets like Ezwire, but they are not a restoration grade set and most have way more circuits than you need. I can't recommend any from experience specifically with the harnesses, but I can tell you that the quality of everything I have bought from Dennis-Carpenter has been outstanding and I can't say that for LMC.

I just bought an American Autowire Classic update kit for our trucks. I really like it so far... haven't installed it yet, not that far along, but took it out of the box laid it out and inventoried it. It is well made, and designed for our trucks. One of the selling points for me was that it came with a new ignition switch (takes a Ford key), head light switch, and dimmer switch. It does have some extra circuits so to speak built into it so you can add some more stuff if needed.
With that said, it isn't cheap. You can get it cheaper that what they want for it if you look on eBay.

Looking at the pics, it looks like the one listed by Dennis Carpenter.

Walston- thanks for the tip! It seems dennis carpenter sources their harness from American auto. Good to know about Dennis carpenter gear too. I have been ordering a lot of gear from LMC and it has been pretty good, however I am waiting on door rubbers from LMC and I’ve read that they are not a very good fit compared to DC. I’ll let you guys know how I go.
Jeff- thanks for the advice. I bought a harness from American auto wire. After looking on their site and having a bit of a read I feel like this kit will be well suited to what I want. Dam it is expensive though!

Dennis,
I used a Speedway Motors brand kit for my 1960 4X4 restoration. Can't beat the price. It is GM based and I had to modify the mounting for the headlight switch just a bit. Can't tell from stock unless you look under the dash and notice the 1980's generation GM fuse panel. Directions were great.

Harness installed
Hi guys,
just thought i’d provide some feedback about my American autowire harness I bought and installed. I’m happy with my purchase as I was diving deep into the land of unknown, as I have never attempted any wiring before this. But this kit was expensive and I would have thought it would include some more kit.
Without having another wiring kit install to compare this kit against, it’s hard to make a direc comparison but it was pretty bloody easy to install. When I opened the kit I was overwhelmed, but for the first weeks after work I just sat down for 30min and read the instructions and checked off gear. Then I just followed the instructions and chipped away at the install every other afternoon after work and then it was finished.
pros
- easy install
- clear and easy install instructions (once you wrap your head around it)
- wires labeled
- a lot of plug in connectors to make easy work (like the headlight switch, just plugs right in)
- great after sales customer tec
- loads of aftermarket wires (loads I don’t need, but nice to have the option)
- LED tail light wire for future use
Cons
- no tail light pig tails
- no park light pig tails
- no generator warning light wires in instrument panel (just left with an empty hole)
after i I dropped the engine in I hooked up the engine wires and it cranked over first try. So pretty happy with that.
