I got quoted $670 in labor to pull the bed and replace the support rails on my short box. I just need to supply the Dorman kit to them to replace. Seems reasonable to me but what do you think? I really don't have the proper tools and time to do it properly, let alone welding equipment. My rails are rotted very badly but the bottom of the bed looks almost pristine.
I know a 6.0 owner who used the dorman kit and was happy with it. He did it himself, so I can't speak to the labor cost portion... He's the kind of guy who has a tractor to lift the bed off.
For me saving the bed with new support rails vs take-off depends on the progression of rust at the wheel wells. You really need to look at that lip area from behind. Unless you’re good at welding sheet.

that aint a bad price considering your supplying the rail replacements... just make sure to get the correct dorman kit as there is 2 different kits.. 1 kit is for the short beds.. the other is the long bed kit.
And if the bed comes off, do the harpoon mod to the tank!
Already planning on that!! Just need to pull the sending unit and cut off the fill and vent spouts inside the tank right? I've been trying to find out if everything is out of the way to pull it with the bed off or if there is a cross piece in the way that needs to be removed.

yup... could do the hutch mod too while your at it.. mixed opinions on the 6.0s about doing it.. but i did.. havent had issues..
The 6.0 is not a candidate for the Hutch. The Hutch removed the warming/filter chamber installed for the 7.3L.
Harpooning is very easy with the bed removed AND a low amount of fuel in the tank.
the version of the hutch i had read on involved simply moving the return line away from the feed line since they sat next to each other... this was supposedly to prevent the feed tube from sucking the air bubbles up coming from the return line.
I don't think there's a benefit, only the risk of screwing around with a $300 pickup. Me and the Hutch mod go way back.
i did it with mine.. and kinda used the bottom of the tank to support the end. that way there wasnt the vibrating/flexing snapping issue others talked about in other threads. end of it sits 6" forward and away from the pickup now..
i used the hard brake line.. also removed the outer green paint too.. (local stores didnt carry the stainless non-coated stuff when i was looking).. i was rather surprised when i was working on both to find no baffles inside the tank.. first time ive had one like that..
