I need some assistance identifying my transmission in my pickup. I have a 1983 F-150 with 4.9L (300-6) with a manual 4-speed tranny. The tranny has what I would call granny-low 1rst gear. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Bremen that is true
but what is the first gear of the tranny that will also determine the difference
as the T-18 uses something like a 6:12 first gear then jumps to a 3:08 I believe..dont quote me..I will have to go look at my T-18 and all...
the T-19 uses a 6:32 first gear and around the same second gear
The T19 was only offered behind the 460 and diesel in 86-up trucks, and has 3 gearsets, the widest having being 6.32, 3.09, 1.69, 1:1(same gearset as a T18, only diffrence the casual operator would notice is that the T19 has a syncronised 1st gear,) the next being 5.11, 3.03, 1.79 and 1:1 and the closest having 4.02, 2.41, 1.41, 1:1(My buddy has this in his F350... with 4.10 gears and 33's, it nearly stalls the 6.9 if it isn't on level ground or headed downhill)....
The NP 435 has a 6.69 first gear, 3.36 second, 1.56 third, and 1:1 4th.
Just from the gear ratios alone, you are not going to be able to ID the transmission, 6.32 is close enough to 6.69 that you probably won't notice the difference driving the truck.
Again, Aluminum top cover = NP 435, Completley cast iron transmission in an F150 = T18.
