Hey guys and gals, i recently bought a 91 superduty with a 7.3 idi. Its a clean engine, runs good, but the plan is to pull the engine and tranny and install in to a 77 f250 highboy.
While the engine is out, besides gaskets the need to be replaced, is there anything else to change, or modify while the engine is out, that would be better to do it now, than having to pull it out later because I didnt mod or fix a common issue?
Have the crank balanced. Check the condition of your harmonic balancer. My HB was eroded on the inside.
Do the HG's, as DarkOverCast said. Add some Head Studs if you want to invest the money. It's lots easier getting over 120 ftlbs with the engine on the stand than doing it in the engine bay.
Get a good engine stand. Don't cheap out. At least a 2-ton.
If the oil cooler is original, you might want to replace the o-rings and gaskets. The o-rings get brittle over time and are prone to leaking.
Thanks for the replies. I had planned to do gaskets, i don't think im going to dig into it as far as bearings, rings and doing the crank, it should be fine as is for that sort of thing. I'll look into resealing the injectors and oil cooler though! Thanks, keep coming!
Check the freeze plugs very carefully, especially the two behind the flywheel. You don't want to have to replace those later, and some of the others can't be done properly with the engine in the truck...
if you ever plan on turboing it do head studs. also while you have the heads off check the valve guide wear.
rebuild the oil cooler while it is out as well only use motorcraft seals on it.
idiperformance.com is a great place for head studs or other parts.
Modern soundproofing material in the 77 cab, and 99-04 Superduty front leaf swap.
Call me jealous. I miss my old 79 F250, but love my 86 6.9idi. Would have loved to combine the two. Seriously, if you haven't done a SD leaf swap in it, it's the best thing I ever did to mine. Made it ride smooth as a newer truck.
